I like this much better than the original, especially as this one is generally true. 🙂 Of course, as a former PE teacher, I REALLY didn’t like the extended version: Those can do; those who can’t do, teach; and those who can’t teach, teach PE. 😦
Unfortunately, that reflects the thinking of too many people who fail to understand that nurturing children – teaching, parenting, mentoring – is absolutely the most important thing we who enjoy civilization CAN DO.
Sue, I believe that is the point of the saying. It is very dismissive of the teaching profession. Why do you think that teaching is not seen as more valuable in our society? Why aren’t teachers some of the most highly paid workers in our country? They shape future citizens more than CEO’s.

You have a point, but I believe they were trying to say that perhaps teaching doesn’t always get the best…..
