Homestead Air Force Base was my dad’s last assignment before retiring in 1961 after 20 years active duty. Hurricane Andrew’s 200 mph winds rendered the base almost beyond repair in 1992 as bases were being closed. But it has survived as Air Reserve Base.

Do they run relief flights out of it these days? It’s a good location for it.

They do, but apparently they also serve in several capacities according to their website: “The 482nd FW, the
host unit of Homestead ARB, continues to support contingency and training operations of U.S. Southern
Command and … the U.S. Coast Guard Maritime Safety and Security Team, and an air and maritime unit of U.S. Customs and Border Protection.”
