July 26, 1953 — A band of anti-Batistas revolted against President Fulgencio Batista with an unsuccessful attack on the Moncada army barracks in eastern Cuba. Castro was among the moncadistas and was imprisoned on the Isle of Pines after the attack at Moncada. Castro ousted Batista six years later.

    In port in the Navy, I used to drink lunchtime tequlia shots with a guy named Joel Batista. He had these little clay shot glasses. Aftwards, his (very pretty) wife would bring us espresso in identical glasses. Then we’d head back to the ship!
