Jake’s challenge this week is City and I started thinking about the various cities that I have lived in and what they are like today; which got me thinking about what they would be like in the future; which got me thinking about the past and the remains of ancient cities that I have seen in the Great Southwest.
The Pueblo people settled here in New Mexico’s sheltered Frijoles Canyon near a year-round supply of water and made homes in the Tuff (compacted volcanic ash). They eventually constructed rock shelters and set up a trade network reaching as far as Mexico.
I like the message on the sign at the trailhead, “…These places are not abandoned, just no longer lived in. The spirits of the Pueblo ancestors still live here…” This simple message gives me comfort about the future of our cities.
