Where is the Golden Gate Bridge District Donor Wall?

The image below was on the Golden Gate Bridge Highway & Transportation District website on January 13, 2012. As of today, the image is no longer there and the date of the last update is still January 13, 2012.

”…There will be a NEW display installed at the Plaza inscribed with the wording/text of all of the bricks. Below is an artist’s rendering of the tribute.” —GGBH&TD website on June 8, 2012 (identified as “posted January 13, 2012”)

I am certain about the date and information because I posted an article that day about the Joseph Strauss Legacy Circle.

Here is what the District’s website is saying today:
“A new display is under consideration that may be a digital display. Visit www.goldengatebridge75.org for more information on this site improvement.”

The good news is that the District now has a link to a Google Map that allows you to search the database of bricks for images of your missing brick.

As an employee of the Golden Gate Bridge District, I am saddened by the actions of the GGB and the Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy over the treatment of the patrons who purchased Commemorative Bricks 25 years ago. During and after the demolition process in January, I spoke to many people who expressed outrage about the situation.

The stories that I heard touched me and stirred my soul to do something. I don’t make or influence policy, but I can do this: I will make information about the Brick Walkway available through this blog.

On January 27, 2012 the Board of Directors of the Golden Gate Bridge Highway & Transportation District convened for a meeting. The Agenda of that meeting is part of the Public Record and can be found here. What is of particular interest to me is Item 13, Communications, pages 5—32 (click here). You can read for yourself some of these personal stories and the response by the District.

Do you see a pattern developing?

I’d be pissed if I’d paid for a brick… so typical of bureaucracy that they can’t leave good enough alone. I’ll be interested to see how this one plays out.

A lot of people are upset about the way this went down. I will have more when the ‘Strauss Legacy Circle’ is unveiled.
