The U.S. Constitution is less than a quarter the length of the owner’s manual for a 1998 Toyota Camry, and yet it has managed to keep 300 million of the world’s most unruly, passionate and energetic people safe, prosperous and free. —P. J. O’Rourke

With available time, I’ve been reading about the revolutionary war and the beginnings of this country, including philosophers and many involved. Of more recent, I’ve been rereading the U.S. Constitution. With all of my experiences and education, I’m sorry to say that some of the language is difficult, which requires rereading, but also looking up terminologies we don’t hear anymore. But in reading, I realize more the depths to which so many took to truly understanding the state of man and what real freedom means. *I don’t think I could find too many in our youth that could understand most of it. That’s a concern. Literacy requires time and practice, but also reading the literature from generations before, then discussing them. It requires thinking, understanding, and contemplation of what so many learned and understood before. I must say, in my youth, I was probably like most of today’s youth, wondering why I needed to read some of this stuff. But I am thankful for what I did learn, but also wished my teachers had taught us more, perhaps more from the heart. As I am one who thinks for themselves, I would have listened, learned, but later did my own research. For me, and some of my friends, when we learn something, we listen to our common sense: what makes sense. That self wonder and thinking is something to be encouraged.
