December 30, 1936 — The United Auto Workers union staged its first sit-down strike at the Fisher Body Plant No. 1 in Flint, Michigan. Led by Walter and Victor Reuther, union activists withstood violent confrontations with the police to force General Motors to recognize and negotiate with the trade union.
