We’ve just gotten the final word… When I was a kid, my father used to say our greatest hopes and our worst fears are seldom realized. Our worst fears have been realized tonight. They have now said that there were 11 hostages. Two were killed in their rooms… Nine others were killed at the airport tonight. They’re all gone. —Jim McKay, after 16 hours of reporting, for ABC’s Wide World of Sports at the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich, Germany

I’m reminded of this horrific incident every time I read a Daniel Silva book featuring Gabriel Allon. Allon became an assassin while revenging the deaths of the Israeli athletes.

I’m not familiar with that author’s work, and it is an unusual hook for a character.

Daniel Silva is an excellent author who sometimes makes me wonder who’s giving him information on world happenings because he’s so on target, much like David Baldacci. Try one, you may like it. 🙂
