May 3, 1970 — James A. Rhodes, the governor of Ohio, in a press conference in Kent, called anti-war protesters “the worst type of people we harbor in America, worse than the brownshirts and the communist element.” Rhodes had ordered the National Guard into Kent to quell anti-war demonstrations that began after President Nixon announced the American incursion into Cambodia on April 30.

Excessive rhetoric is nothing new. The revival of the Brownshirts aka Nazis in Charlottesville was a disturbing reminder of a failure to remember history and a lack critical thinking that results in false equivalencies by a governor in 1970 and a president in 2017.
