The Baseball Bloggess has some eye-opening news for us concerning the new omnibus spending bill’s minimum wage provisions and minor-league baseball players.

On Friday, while major league ballplayers in Florida and Arizona were squeezing baseball games in between their tee times, Congress and President Trump were changing the rules of the game for minor leaguers.

You thought starting extra innings with a player on second is ridiculous?

It is. We can talk about that later.

Today’s ridiculosity (not a word; should be a word) is a rule change hidden away on Page 1,967 of the $1.3-trillion omnibus spending bill, signed into law by President Trump on Friday, which dramatically changes fair labor laws as they apply to minor leaguers.

From here on out – thanks to President Trump, Congress, and the wealthy team owners whospent more than $1 million lobbying in Washington these past two years– minor leaguers will no longer be protected by minimum wage or overtime regulations.

Thank you so much for sharing my post. I’m guessing this won’t be the last thing we’ll hear about this … so I’ll keep on top of it and post and updates — including legal actions by players, etc. Someone wrote me via email and said that at the low A games they go to fans pass the hat during games to help support the players … that just broke my heart that fans felt they needed to support players because they weren’t being paid enough to cover just basics like food and rent.

We have an independent league around here and families volunteer to provide housing for the players in exchange for tickets and promotional events during the season.
