Title: Riding the Rails

“The trick to hopping a boxcar on a moving freight train is to grab hold of the ladder at the front of the car.”

Panama Red knew some stuff and he shared his knowledge freely with those who were patient enough to listen.

“Ya see, that way if you fall, you have the length of the boxcar to give you the time to roll out of the way of the next set of wheels.”

I wasn’t going to be hopping a moving freight anytime soon. Who else is going to care for that damn dog that is following me everywhere?

Thanks, Amy. I got my info back in 1977 when I worked with a guy who shared the finer points of hopping from when he rode the rails during the Great Depression.

Ah, nice one! I did a bit about freight hopping in my story, too. It would be pretty hard to freight hop with a dog. It makes me laugh just to think about it.

Just hopping around to some of the entries. Your story sounds like something from an old western movie. I like the fact that he’s staying with the dog. : )

Allan, nothing to do with FF, but I’ve nominated you to take part in the 5-Day Black and White Photo Challenge if you so desire. Just publish 5 B&W photos and with each one, nominate someone else to participate. Hope you accept, but if not, I understand.

Thanks so much for thinking of me. I will accept the challenge.

You are the third person to nominate me and I will get to work on my entries.

Hopping or doggin’ it? Much to be said for doggin’ it… Great imagery in a small space – words & photo.

Thanks, Al. Whenever I think about hopping a freight I think about the movie Midnight Run.

The dismount is the hard part.
